The European route E 05 is part of the United Nations international E-road network. It is the westernmost north-south "reference road", running from Greenock, Scotland south through England and France to Algeciras, Spain.〔(European Agreement on Main International Traffic Arteries ), 5 April 2002〕 The E 05 follows the route Greenock - Paisley - Renfrew - Govan - Glasgow - Gretna - Carlisle - Penrith - Preston - Warrington - Winsford - Stoke-On-Trent - Birmingham - Newbury - Southampton - Le Havre - Paris - Orléans - Tours - Poitiers - Bordeaux - San Sebastián - Burgos - Madrid - Córdoba - Sevilla - Cádiz - Algeciras ==United Kingdom (724 km)==
Although the United Kingdom Government participates fully in activities concerning the E-routes,〔For example (''Economic and Social Council Document ECE/TRANS/WP.6/AC.2/18 - 17 December 2008; Agenda item 6'' ) Participation in the 2005 E-route census〕 E-routes are not signposted within the United Kingdom. The E05 follows the following roads: *A8 and M8, Greenock into Glasgow *M8 through Glasgow *M74 and A74(M), Glasgow via Gretna to Carlisle *M6 Carlisle via Penrith, Preston, Warrington and Stoke-on-Trent to Birmingham * *The M6 Toll provides an alternative route in the Birmingham area. *M42, M40, A34 and M3, Birmingham via Newbury to Southampton The E 05 has a gap at the English Channel between Southampton and Le Havre, France. There is no direct ferry link, but a ferry from nearby Portsmouth, along the M27, connects to Le Havre.
